CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 15 Parkland men's basketball used a 27-13 over the game's final seven minutes to extend its season-opening win streak to eight games. Improving to 8-0, the Cobras defeated Rose Hulman JV by a score 80-67 and were led by 15 points from both
Yaakema Rose Jr. and
Charles Campbell Jr.
After struggling with their shot in the first half, Parkland used 58.3-percent in the second half to finish the game at 47.9-percent shooting and 36.8-percent from three-point range. Only turning the ball over eight times, two below their 10.0 per game average that ranks 13
th nationally, the Cobras forced 20 Rose Hulman turnovers including 11 in the second half. Individually, all five Parkland starters scored in double figures with
Bruno Williams Jr. (14),
Darin Bellinger (13) and
Ty'Ohn Trimble (10) joining Rose Jr. and Campbell Jr.
Sparking the 14-point advantage over the final seven minutes with a three-possession sequence that turned a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead. Following a made basket by Hulman to give them a 54-53 lead, Campbell hit a jumper to retake the lead for the Cobras. Following the shot, the Engineers were whistled for a foul that gave Parkland the ball back. Capitalizing off the free possession, Rose Jr. hit another jumper. Before Hulman could bring the ball back to half court, Bellinger stole it back and capped the fast break off with a dunk. After missed free throw on the other end, Campbell Jr. ended the run with his second jumper, giving the Cobras a 61-54 lead. Rose Hulman would cut the lead back to as close to three points with 2:14 remaining before Parkland closed the game on a 12-2 spurt ignited by a three, a steal and a dunk by Campbell. Rose Jr. closed out the game with three layups and a free throw.
Despite scoring the first seven points of the game, and holding an eight-point lead six minutes into the half, Parkland struggled to find their offense during the first half. Shooting just 37-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 27-percent from three-point range, the Cobras also got into early foul trouble with each of its three forwards picking up two personals. The Fighting Engineers took advantage of their 12 free-throw attempts, knocking down nine of them, while hitting 44-percent of its first-half shot attempts. A turn-around jumper with a shooter's roll gave the visitors a 34-33 advantage heading into the locker room.
Thanks to the late onslaught that spurred the Cobras' fifth double-digit victory, Parkland shot 58-percent from the field in the second half, including 50% from beyond the arc. Both with two points at halftime, Rose Jr. and Campbell combined for 26 of the team's 47 second-half points on a combined 12 of 15 shooting. Adding in eight more points early in the half to initially regain the lead was
Darin Bellinger who opened the half with a pair of threes. Rose Hulman would respond with an 18-10 advantage over the next 10 minutes to regain the lead, 54-53, before the Cobras' late run to win the game.
Leading the Rose Hulman offense was low post production from Trey Wurtz who scored a game-high 24 points, while Taylor Heil added in 18 more. Overall, the visiting Engineers shot 48.9-percent on the evening and 46.7-percent from three.
Up next, Parkland will take its undefeated (8-0) record back on the road on Sunday, December 2, when the Cobras face St. Louis Community College at noon central time. The Cobras are 4-0 this season in true road games.
