BURLINGTON, Iowa – No. 3 Parkland men's basketball outscored Division I (RV) Southeastern by 10 points in the second half, but saw their comeback fall short, 73-59, on Monday (12/17) evening. Parkland's first loss of the season (11-1), the Cobras were led by 21 points, 17 in the second half, from
Ty'Ohn Trimble.
After multiple second half comebacks proved fruitful earlier in the season, the Cobras were unable to complete the late rally on Monday. Trailing by 24 points, 41-17, at halftime, the Cobras scored 42 points in the second half on 44-percent shooting. Twice cutting the lead to 11 points in the closing minutes, the Cobras were unable to cut the deficit to single digits. Overall, Parkland shot 30 percent from the field and turned the ball over a season-high 19 times compared to just four assists.
Leading the second-half charge, sophomore point guard
Ty'Ohn Trimble was lethal from downtown as the Alton, Ill., native knocked down three threes and scored 17 points after the break. Joining Trimble in double figures was
Yaakema Rose Jr. with 16 points, 11 coming in the second half.
Facing a pressure defense by Southeastern, Parkland struggled to break the Blackhawks' full-court press in the first half and trailed 41-17 at halftime. In addition to a seven-minute scoring drought to start the game, the Cobras turned the ball over 10 times in the opening period after averaging just 10 turnovers per game through 11 contests. The disruptive defense also held the Cobras to 12 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. Rose Jr. led the first half scoring with five points, hitting one of the team's three shots.
The Cobras will have the next two weeks off before returning to the court on January 8 against Kankakee Community College at 7 p.m. central time.
