Cobras win by 27 over Waubonsee.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland women's basketball won its eighth consecutive game, defeating Waubonsee, 75-48, at Donald Dodds Athletic Complex on Saturday. Leading the Cobras was freshman forward Emily Meinert who recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Crystal Mathis led all scorers with 14, while Gemma Rescasens added in 10 more.

Holding Waubonsee to 30-percent shooting on the day, Parkland turned the Chiefs over 23 times, turning the extra possessions into 24 points. Of the 24 points off turnovers, 22 came in transition to go along with 19 second chance points as a result of 19 offensive rebounds. Offensively, the Cobras shot 40.5-percent from the field, led by a 63.2-percent efficiency in the first quarter.

Earning her second double-double in three games, bringing down 13 rebounds, including four offensive boards, and netting 13 points. The 13 points gives her four double-digit performances in the last five games.

Mathis, Parkland's leading score through nine games with 13.0 points per game, dropped 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting, while Rescasens scored in double figures for the second straight match with 10  points on five shots.

Parkland raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the game, highlighted by a pair of lay-ups by Gemma Rescasens. The Cobras continued its early push with fast break points off Cobras turnovers and good looks after breaking the Waubonsee press, holding the Chiefs to just one field goal in the first seven minutes. Leading by as much as 15, the Cobras closed the quarter with a 14-point advantage.

A 6-2 run by the visitors to open the second period cut the Cobras lead to 10 points, but it would be as close as the Chiefs would get as Parkland responded with a 19-4 run off a number of points in transition and continuing to break the Waubonsee full-court defense.

Continuing its strong defensive effort, the Cobras opened the second half by holding Waubonsee to just seven points, doubling up the visitors with 14 points of its own. Alexus Cole made a three-pointer and a free-throw to lead the Cobras, while five other Cobras got in the scoring column.

Finishing off the 27-point victory, Parkland tallied 12 points in the final period. Madelyn Brower led the quarter with two made jumpers in the paint.

Up next, the Cobras will have a week to prepare for a road game on Saturday, December 15, against Rock Valley. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. central time.
