CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 4 Parkland men's basketball won its 15
th game of the season, improving to 15-2, with a 85-70 victory against Illinois Wesleyan JV on Monday night. Four Cobras scored in double figures, as
Yaakema Rose Jr. led with 14 points, followed by
Bruno Williams Jr. with 11 and a season-high 10 points from both
Tommy Makabu and
Jaden Coleman.
Leading for the final 33 minutes of the game, Parkland dominated the glass with a 54-31 overall advantage, as 11 different Cobras corralled at least three boards to set a season-high in total rebounds. Aiding the plus-23 rebounding margin was Parkland's effort on the offensive end, turning 17 second chance opportunities into 18 points. The Cobras also held the edge in turnovers and transition points, forcing 14 Wesleyan turnovers and turning it into 19 points on the other end.
Shooting 46.3 percent from the field overall, the Cobras were paced by efficient shooting from Rose Jr., Williams Jr., Makabu and
Jaden Coleman. The four double-digit scorers combined to shoot 21-of-33 (64%) from the field. The foursome also forced seven of Parkland's eight steals and grabbed 17 rebounds.
Highlighted by two reserves scoring 10 points, the Parkland reserves combined for 47 of the team's 85 points on the evening. Joining the 10 by Makabu and Coleman,
Carter Jeffries and
Darin Bellinger contributed seven apiece while
Jordan Coleman and
Mark Emmanuel Jr. scored six and five, respectively. The bench mob was equally active on the glass, as Jordan and
Jaden Coleman and Emmanuel Jr. tied starter
Joey Saracco for a team-high six rebounds. Emmanuel also blocked two shots to lead the Cobras.
Parkland and Illinois Wesleyan traded buckets in the early going on Monday, with the visitors creating their largest lead of the game, 12-8, with 14:06 left in the first half. From there, the Cobras rattled off 14 unanswered points over the next five minutes of action, capped by back-to-back layups from Makabu. Another 10-2 run – charged by seven points from Williams Jr. – sent the Cobras into the locker room with a 45-30 lead.
The double-digit lead entering the second half would never be cut to less than 10. Still hanging to a 12-point lead with 13:27 to go, the Cobras put the game away over the next eight minutes by outscoring the Titans by 11, 24-13, to create its largest lead of the night at 74-52. Highlighting the run was six of
Jaden Coleman's eight second-half points and a tip-dunk from Emmanuel Jr.
Up next, Parkland continues its four-game homestand with its first conference game of the season. The Cobras host Danville Area CC on Saturday, January 26, at 3 p.m. central time. Parkland College will induct
seven new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame during halftime.
