CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland women's basketball won its conference opener, a 56-42 defeat of Danville Area CC, behind sophomore forward
Micah Tapscott's 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. Overcoming a 15-4 deficit after the first period, Parkland outscored Danville Area 40-20 in the second half to improve to 13-7 on the season.
Scoring 11 of her 19 points in the first five minutes of the second half, Tapscott led the comeback with five straight shots without a miss, including a made free throw to complete a three-point play. Her third double-double of the season, and second in the last month, Tapscott added 10 rebounds, three on the offensive end. The 19 points extends Tapscott's streak to seven straight games in double figures with a 17.1 points-per-game average during that span.
Trailing by six points at the half, the Cobras went on a 19-2 – including 17 straight points – run to begin the second half to take control of the game. Leading the charge was a 11-0 run by Tapscott that turned a 26-22 deficit into a 33-26 advantage. Setting up the run by Tapscott were three assists from
Crystal Mathis and two more from Gemma Rescasens. Four points from
Cassie Russo got the run started.

Madelyn Brouwer gave the Cobras eight points off the bench, while
Cassie Russo added six points and three rebounds in her first start of the season.
After a slow start put the Cobras down by 11 to start the second quarter,
Micah Tapscott led a 12-7 second-quarter advantage and finished the half with five points and six rebounds. Cutting the lead at the half, 22-16, the Cobras held the Jaguars to 22.2 percent shooting in the second period.
Shooting 50 percent in the second half, Parkland held Danville to 6-25 from the field in the second half with 15 turnovers. After the 20-9 run in the third quarter, Parkland continued the second-half dominance with a 20-11 advantage in the final frame. Brouwer helped close out the 13
th win of the season with six of her eight in the final 10 minutes, while
Shoente'ra Russell also contributed six points in the period.
As part of Hall of Fame Day at Parkland, seven new members were inducted into the Parkland Athletics Hall of Fame during halftime of the men's basketball game. Among the seven new inductees, two were women's basketball alums Hannah Ohl Cronk ('11) and Heidi McKean Wlezien ('09). Both All-Americans, the two Class of 2018 Hall of Famers were a part of three of the most successful teams in program history, as McKean helped Parkland place fourth in 2009 and Ohl sixth in 2010 and third in 2011.
A part of today's game, Hannah Ohl Cronk currently serves as an assistant coach for Danville Area Community College women's basketball team.
Winners of three of its last four, the Cobras will continue their three-game, conference homestand on Wednesday, January 30, at 5:30 p.m. against No. 14 Lincoln Land. The three straight home games conclude a week from today, February 2, against John Wood at 1 p.m.
