Cobras Fall Short in Region 24 Quarterfinal

Tapscott tallies 19 points, eight rebounds to lead Cobras

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 4 seed Parkland women's basketball dropped its Region 24 quarterfinal matchup against No. 5 seed Lewis & Clark, 67-53, on Wednesday night inside Donald Dodds Athletic Complex. The Cobras finish the 2018-19 season with a 16-14 overall record.

The Cobras were led on Wednesday night by near double-double performances from forwards Micah Tapscott and Emily Meinert. Playing her final game for the Cobras, Tapscott scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting to lead all scorers while also grabbing eight rebounds. Joining Tapscott off the bench, Meinert grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and tallied nine points. Meinert also led the team with four assists.

Joining Meinert in production off the bench, sophomore Alexus Cole knocked down three of her four shots, including two three-pointers to finish third on the team with eight points on Wednesday.

After Parkland drew blood first with a jumper from Tapscott, the Cobras fell behind early as Lewis & Clark went on a 17-3 run over the next four minutes. Trailing by 12, the Cobras responded with a 10-0 run of their own to end the first quarter. After a Tapscott jumper started the run, Olivia Babcock and Alexus Cole each knocked down threes before an Emily Meinert second-chance layup with 13 seconds left cut the Lewis & Clark lead to 17-15.

The Trailblazers ended the Parkland run with three points to start the second quarter, only to have Parkland respond with a 6-0 run to retake the lead, 21-20, on a transition layup by Shoente'ra Russell with 6:50 left in the half. The two teams exchanged the lead multiple times over the following two minutes, but a 10-0 Lewis & Clark run over the final 3:32 put the Cobras in a 10-point hole going into halftime.

Shooting 50-percent in the third quarter, the Cobras stayed within striking distance behind seven points from Tapscott. Cutting to as close as five points twice in the quarter, Lewis & Clark again closed the half on a run to push the lead back to double digits, 50-38, at quarter's end.

Scoring seven of her nine points in the final 10 minutes, forward Emily Meinert lead the Cobras in the final quarter of the game. However, the Cobras couldn't cut into the lead as Lewis & Clark won the final period, 17-15, to advance to the Region 24 semifinals on Saturday in Danville.

The Cobras conclude the season with a 16-14 overall record, 4-6 in the M-WAC. Sophomore forward Micah Tapscott led the team with 12.0 points per game and finished second on the team with 6.3 rebounds behind Meinert's 6.4 per-game average, while sophomore point guard Olivia Babcock dished out a team-high 3.8 assists per game this season.
