CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 8 Parkland baseball completed a four-game sweep of Region 24 foe Vincennes with a doubleheader sweep at home on Tuesday. Improving to 15-6, and extending their winning streak to six games, the Cobras defeated the Trailblazers 6-2 in game one and then shutout the Trailblazers, 4-0, in game two.
Backed by a pair of stand-out pitching performances, the Cobras held Vincennes scoreless in 13 of the 14 innings, allowing just two runs in the third inning of game one. Starters
Ryan Culley (3-1) and
Jake Rosing (1-0) combined for the two victories, while relievers
Chase Gockel and
Jordan Walden each pitched two clean innings to close out the wins.
Offensively, Parkland pounded out 19 hits to score 10 runs across the two victories, led by a five-hit day from centerfielder
Trevor Burkhart. Scoring twice, the speedster also poached his 14
th stolen base on the season. In game two, designated hitter
Jeremiah Lebron delivered the game-winning RBI on his third home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left-field wall.
Up next, Parkland travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa tomorrow for a nine-inning game at Kirkwood beginning at 2 p.m. central time. The Cobras return home on Friday, April 5, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against John Wood.
Game 1: No. 8 Parkland 6, Vincennes 2
Parkland scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth on six hits and starter
Ryan Culley (3-1) threw five innings, allowing two runs, for a 6-2 victory in game one.
Picking up where he left off after striking out 17 in his last start, Culley struck out seven Trailblazers over five innings. Allowing just two runs on two hits and a walk, had two clean frames and only allowed multiple baserunners in two innings. The quality start lowers the freshman right-hander's ERA to 2.80.
Chase Gockel tossed two shutout-innings in relief to finish of the victory. Gockel retired six of the seven batters he faced, striking out four and walking one.
Batting ninth, centerfielder
Trevor Burkhart went 3-3 with three singles, three runs and a stolen base to lead the offense. Dan Warkentin (2-4) and
Austin Biehl (2-2, RBI) also recorded two multi-hit games, while leadoff hitter
Patrick Hayes drew a pair of walks, including one with the bases load, to reach base twice.
Trailing 2-1 after a two-out rally from Vincennes in the top of the fourth, Parkland put its first six batters on base in the bottom of the inning. Ignited by
Tynan Shahidi to lead off the inning, the Cobras hit five consecutive singles as
Jeremiah Lebron and
Justin Dunne drove in runs. After a bases-loaded walk by
Patrick Hayes brought in a third run and chased the Vincennes starter, pinch hitter
Austin Biehl and
Corey Price singled home the final two runs.
Prior to trailing 2-1, the Cobras scored first with two singles in the third inning. Burkhart led off the inning with a single, and then came around to score on a two-out, RBI single from
Trevor Minder.
Game 2: No. 8 Parkland 4, Vincennes 0
Designated hitter
Jeremiah Lebron blasted a go-ahead home run in the fourth inning and
Jake Rosing won his collegiate debut with five shutout innings and four strikeouts.
Economical in his Cobra debut, Rosing faced just 20 batters to get through five innings in game two. Never facing more than five batters in an inning, the righthander sat down four batters by strikeout, while only allowing three hits and two walks.
Again, receiving efficient work from the pen, reliever
Jordan Walden shut down the Trailblazers for the final two innings.
Joining Lebron's offensive output, eight of the Cobras' nine starters reach base in the win including Burkhart's second straight multi-hit game out of the ninth spot. Right fielder
Corey Price recorded the team's third RBI with a single in the fifth.
Held just an infield single through three innings, Biehl reached on an error by the Trailblazer shortstop to lead off the fourth. Lebron then stepped in and unloaded a two-run bomb over the left-centerfield fence for his third jack of the year.
Justin Dunne followed Lebron with a double and scored on a single and throwing error off the bat of Burkhart.
After another clean inning from Rosing, the Cobras tacked on another insurance run in the fifth with three hits in the inning after a
Robert Barnard hit-by-pitch to start the inning. After a wild pitch put Barnard in scoring position, Price drove him with a single to right field. A Dan Warkentin single to center nearly scored a second run, but Price was cut down at the plate.
Jordan Walden closed out the doubleheader sweep scoreless sixth and seventh innings, striking out one.
