Cobras Sweep Past Cavaliers in Monday DH

Witruk, Parrish pick up wins, Newton hits walk-off homer

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland softball swept a doubleheader from visiting Kankakee on Monday afternoon, taking down the Cavaliers 7-4 in game one and 11-2 (5 inn.) in game two. Capped by a walk-off home run by Emma Newton in game two, the Cobras improved their overall record to 25-17.

Morgan Parrish (8-3) picked up her team-leading eighth win of the season, while Camryn Skundberg recorded a hit in all four at-bats and Summer Johnson launched her fifth home run of the season to back the sophomore pitcher. Emma Newton (2-3, RBI) and Bri Poehler (2-4) joined Skundberg and Johnson with multiple hits in game one. Reliever Kate Beckemeyer sat down the final seven batters she faced in 2.2 shutout innings.

Tori Witruk (10-3) picked up her team-leading 10th win of the season in game two, setting down the final 10 Cavaliers she faced. The Cobras then scored 10 runs over the final three innings, capped by a seven-run fifth inning that ended with a Newton's walk-off two-run homer. Skundberg added two more hits in the second game, giving her six on the day, while Poehler (3-4), Coffey (2-3, HR) and Lauren Wendling (2-3) also recorded multiple hits.

Up next, Parkland will host three doubleheaders this weekend beginning with Kishwaukee at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Cobras will host Lewis & Clark on Saturday (1 p.m.) and No. 16 Heartland on Sunday (1 p.m.).

Game 1: Parkland 7, Kankakee 4

Parrish tossed three clean innings to start the game, allowing just two baserunners on a walk and a single to set up a three-run bottom of the third to give the Cobras the lead. The sophomore hurler struck out three batters and recorded a clean second inning to highlight the first time through the order.

Six straight Cobras reached base to start the innings, as Poehler and Skundberg singled and Newton walked to load the bases. Bella Coffey and Summer Johnson used consecutive singles to keep the line moving, driving in Poehler and Skundberg. An error by the Kankakee shortstop allowed Mendenhall to reach as Newton brought home the third run of the inning.

After the Cavaliers got a run back in the fourth, the Cobras again strung together consecutive hits to answer with another crooked number. Poehler ignited the inning with a double and then moved to third on a Skundberg single. A third hit by Newton plated Poehler, and then Summer Johnson ripped her fifth homer of the season, capping the the four-run inning.

Kankakee fought back with three runs in the top of the fifth, but Kate Beckemeyer shut down the rally with 2.2 innings of hitless relief. After allowing a walk to the first batter she faced, Beckemeyer retired the next seven Cavs to close out the 7-4 victory.

Game 2: Parkland 11, Kankakee 2 (5 inn.)

Trailing 2-0 on a Cavs second inning home run, Coffey cut the lead with one swing to lead off the bottom half of the inning. The solo shot to left was the freshman first baseman's sixth of the season.

With Witruk setting Kankakee down in order in the third, the Cobras sent nine batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring three runs to take the lead. Poehler and Skundberg started the inning with singles, and then a one-out single by Coffey loaded the bases. Johnson and Witruk both lofted sacrifice flies to center to plate runs, as the Cavs centerfielder dropped the first attempt to allow Johnson to reach on an error. Lining her second hit of the game, Lauren Wendling brought home the third run with a single through the right side.

Leading 4-2, the Cobras blitzed the Cavs for seven runs in the fourth to earn the rule-rule victory. After a flyout to start the inning, back-to-back singles by Johnson and Witruk put runners at the corners. A Witruk steal of second forced a bad throw, allowing Johnson to score, and then a sacrifice bunt by Wendling brought home Witruk. After Ruppert's third walk of the game and an infield single by Beckemeyer loaded the bases, Poehler and Skundberg singles plated three more runs. The game-clinching run standing on third, Newton left no doubt with a long home run to center to walk it off.
