CANTON, Ill. – Parkland softball completed the season sweep of Spoon River, taking both games of the Saturday doubleheader, 3-2 and 13-10. Sophomore
Tori Witruk (7-1) earned the win in both games over 11 innings pitched, while
Summer Johnson (five hits, three RBI) and
Bri Poehler (four hits, three RBI) led the offense.
After sweeping the Snappers in Champaign at the end of March, Parkland swept the four-game season series to improve to 18-10 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Pitching a combined 11 innings over the two wins, Witruk allowed five earned runs while striking out six in route to her team-leading sixth and seventh victories. The sophomore hurler currently owns a 2.71 ERA on the season in 14 appearances.
Summer Johnson led the Cobras in the game one victory with three hits, while Poehler added four hits in game two. First baseman
Bella Coffey hit the lone Cobra homer of the day, a three-run shot in the first inning of game two for her fourth dinger of the season.
Due to rain in southern Illinois, Parkland will not travel to Lewis & Clark for their originally scheduled Sunday doubleheader. The Cobras will make the trip down to Godfrey, Ill., on Tuesday, April 9, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
Game 1: Parkland 3, Spoon River 2
Parkland led wire-to-wire after a two-run first inning, as starter
Tori Witruk allowed just two runs while escaping trouble in multiple innings to pick up her sixth win of the season.
Summer Johnson led the team with three hits and an RBI, while
Camryn Skundberg earned the team's other RBI. In the circle, Witruk threw her first complete game of the season behind six strikeouts to lower her team-leading ERA to 2.50.
The Cobras lineup jumped the Spoon River hurler with three of the first four batters singling to lead off the game. With one out,
Camryn Skundberg drove in Beckemeyer, and then came around to score on a two-out base hit from
Summer Johnson.
Protecting a 2-0 lead, Witruk worked out of trouble in both the bottom of the first and third innings. Facing bases-loaded situations in both frames, Witruk got a ground out to end the first and then a strikeout to strand three Snappers in the third.
The Cobras took their biggest lead of the game in the top of the fourth after a two-out error by the Snappers shortstop scored
Summer Johnson.
After Spoon River leadoff homer in the fourth inning cut the Cobras lead to 3-1, Witruk again came up clutch in the bottom of the fifth by inducing a ground out to escape the bases loaded for the third time.
The Snappers would get another solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but Witruk would hold them there over the following six outs to close out the one-run victory.
Game 2: Parkland 13, Spoon River 10
After grinding out a 3-2 win in game one, the Cobras won a slugfest in game two behind 13 runs on 17 hits.
Tori Witruk picked up her second win of the day to give her a team-leading seven wins on the season.
Five Cobras recorded multi-hit performances, led by a four-hit day from
Bri Poehler that drove in three runs.
Emma Newton and
Bella Coffey each recorded three hits, including a three-run homer from Coffey, while
Summer Johnson and
Tori Witruk each had a pair of hits.
Trailing for the first time all day after a four-run Snappers fourth inning put them ahead 8-6, the Cobras struck back with a seven-run top of the fifth to regain control. Seven straight Cobras reached with one out in the inning, beginning with a Coffey single and a Johnson double. Witruk traded places with Johnson with a double of her own, scoring two to tie the game.
Maddie Quattro then gave the Cobras the lead for good on an RBI single. After another hit, a sacrifice fly by
Kate Beckemeyer and Poehler single plated two more. The duo then scored the sixth and seventh runs of the inning on an
Emma Newton double.
Scoring in each of the four previous innings as well, Parkland scored three times on Coffey's fourth home run of the season, and then added single tallies in the second, third and fourth innings.
Spoon River would get single runs back in both the fifth and sixth, but
Tori Witruk pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the sweep.
Morgan Parrish started the game for Parkland, pitching three innings before turning the ball over to Witruk for the final four frames.
