Parkland Women’s Basketball Topples #5 Lincoln Land

Five Cobras score in double figures

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –Parkland women's basketball (23-6, 6-4 MWAC) was hitting on all cylinders, both offensively and defensively, as it knocked off No. 5 Lincoln Land CC (26-4, 7-3 MWAC) by a final score 75-50. In their previous meeting this season, on February 8th, the Loggers had handled the Cobras, 67-56, in Springfield.

Parkland's offensive and defense were stronger this time, right out of the gate, and after one quarter the Cobras held an 18-8 advantage. By the halftime break, the lead was extended to 41-20. Very little changed in the second half, as Parkland kept up its pressure on both ends, and the Loggers were unable to put together any kind of a comeback run.

Lincoln Land, one of the top offensive teams in the country, was held to 28% shooting and its lowest point total this season. The Cobras, on the other hand, shot 58% from the field and were dominant in the paint, out-rebounding the Loggers 42-19.

Double-digit scorers for Parkland included Bree Trimble (15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists), Emily Meinert (14 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists), who recorded her 18th double-double of the season, Cassie Russo (13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks), Peyton Crowe (12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), and, off the bench, Naomi McDaniel (12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists).

Leading the way to the team's 27 assists were Arianna Booker (7 assists, 2 rebounds) and Gema Alegre (6 assists, 3 rebounds). Alex Specht (4 rebounds, 3 blocks) was especially strong on the defensive end.

Up next, Parkland will host John Wood CC in Champaign, Ill., in the first round of the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament on Wednesday, March 4th, at 5:30 pm.
