Parkland Softball Wins One, Drops Two

Both losses to ranked opponents

BRANDON, Miss. – Parkland softball (3-8) won one of three games on Saturday, and three of five on the weekend, in the Hinds JUCO Classic.
 
In a 9-2 win against Meridian CC (2-8), Summer Johnson wasted no opportunities at the plate, driving in four on three hits. In game 2, the Cobras fell to No. 19 Hinds CC (5-6) when the Eagles scored on the final play of the game. In game 3, Parkland lost in a high-scoring game to No. 5 Highland CC (3-2) by the final score of 11-15.
 
Up next, Parkland will travel to Titusville, Fla., for Space Coast Spring Training, March 14th–March 22nd. On Sunday, March 15th, the Cobras will play Morris at 9:00 am, Rowan-Gloucester at 12:00 pm, and Saint Louis at 2:00 pm.
 
 
Game 1: Parkland 9, Meridian 2 (7 innings) 
 
Parkland got things started in the first inning when Summer Johnson (3-5, 4 RBI) doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.  Meridian scored two in the third, but the Cobras then put up four more in the fourth inning. Johnson, Camryn Skundberg (2-5, 2 RBI), and Ashley Lynch (1 RBI) all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
 
Parkland totaled 16 hits. Johnson drove in runs on a double in the first, a single in the fourth, and a single in the seventh. Ashley Klinzing (3-5), Isabel Shafer (3-4, 1 RBI), and Taylor Dugger (2-3, 1 RBI) each managed multiple hits for the Cobras.
 
Lauren Kavanagh got the win for the Cobras. She lasted seven innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out one.
 
 
Game 2: Parkland 11, (#19)Hinds 12 (7 innings) 
 
Parkland fell behind, 0-2, after two innings, but scored one in the third and two in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Hinds, however, came back with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, to go up, 8-3.
 
Sparked by a home run by Bri Poehler (5-5, 1 RBI) in the fifth, the Cobras scored two and began to come back. Parkland got within one run in the top of the sixth, but the Eagles scored two more in the bottom to take a 10-7 lead. Helping end the sixth inning was Ashley Klinzing, who robbed the Eagles of a home run when she caught a ball while falling thru the fence.
Parkland scored four in the top of the seventh off of home runs by Camryn Skundberg (1-3, 1 RBI) and Lauren Kavanagh (2-4, 5 RBI), to briefly take the lead, 11-10. In the bottom half, Hinds tied it up at 11, and then singled in the winning run in walk-off fashion.
 
The Cobras tallied 18 hits on the day. In addition to Poehler and Kavanagh, Emma Newton (2-5, 2 RBI), Isabel Shafer (3-4), and Taylor Dugger (2-4) collected multiple hits.
 
Sydnee Shafer toed the rubber for Parkland. She surrendered six runs on four hits over three and a third innings, striking out one and walking one. Shelby Frederick threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.
 
Game 3: Parkland 11, (#5)Highland 15 (7 innings) 
 
Parkland captured the lead in the first inning when Emma Newton singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. After three innings, the Cobras led, 3-1, but Highland took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. Parkland added two in the fifth, but a six-run sixth inning, and three more in the top of the seventh, put the Scotties up, 15-5. The Cobras continued to fight in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.
 
Parkland racked up 14 hits in the game. Klinzing (3-4, 1 RBI), Bri Poehler (3-5, 1 RBI), Isable Shafer 2-4, 1 RBI), and Emma Newton (2-5, 1 RBI) each managed multiple hits for the Cobras. Summer Johnson (1-4, 1 RBI) and Shafer both had home runs in the fifth inning.
 
Sydnee Shafer took the loss for Parkland. She went four and a third innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one.
