MATTOON, Ill. – No. 15 Parkland College Men's Basketball (2-1) won its second in a row with an 89-80 victory over Lake Land College (1-1).
The Lakers held a short lead for most of the first eleven minutes of the game, with Parkland taking the lead at 22-20 and then going on a short run. With four minutes remaining in the half, the Cobras led by five, and by the buzzer, the lead was nine, 42-33.
Deonte Douglas (21 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block), who led Parkland in scoring, netted 14 first-half points.
Lake Land started the second period with an 8-2 run, but by the eight-minute mark, the Cobras were back in control by thirteen, 67-54. The Lakers surged again, this time coming within four points, 75-79, with 1:55 remaining on the clock. Solid play down the stretch, along with several made free throws, allowed Parkland to finish the game on a 10-5 run.
In addition to Douglas,
Kelvin Swims Jr. (17 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds),
Savon Wykle (16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks), and
Jordan Burge (12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal) each scored in double figures. Additional heavy contributors included
Jamil Hardaway (7 points, 6 rebounds) and
Josh Rivers (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks).
The Cobras out-shot the Lakers, 48%-41%, and, led by Burge and Wykle, won the battle of the boards, 51-32.
Up next, Parkland remains on the road, traveling to Belleville, Ill., to take on Southwestern Illinois College on Saturday, January 30. Tip-off is scheduled at 3:00 pm.
