CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland College Men's Basketball (10-5, 5-2) pulled of an upset, taking down No. 15 John Wood CC (11-6, 5-2) by the final score of 65-54.
The Cobras were hungry to knock off a ranked opponent and trailed by only one, 14-15, after 10 minutes of play. As the first half progressed, Parkland established itself and pulled to a moderate lead, 36-27, at the break.
When play resumed, the Blazers trimmed the lead, pulling to within seven, 46-39, midway through the second period. Parkland didn't fade, however, rebuilding the margin to nine with 5:00 on the clock, and maintaining a cushion to the buzzer.
Josh Rivers (14 points, 2 rebounds) led a group of four Cobras, including
Savon Wykle (10 points, 7 rebounds),
Kevin Bishop II (10 points, 6 rebounds), and
Kamari Kenemore (10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) who scored in double digits.
Wykle,
Jordan Burge (9 points, 7 rebounds), Bishop II, and
Samuel Beesley (6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block) combined for 26 of Parkland's 39 rebounds.
Deonte Douglas (7 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists) and
Kelvin Swims (4 assists) combined for 9 of the team's 15 assists.
Up next, the Cobras remain in Champaign, Ill., to host No. 12 Spoon River College on Thursday, March 18. Tip-off is scheduled at 7:00 pm.
