CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 19 Parkland College Softball (21-2, 2-0 M-WAC) won both games of its conference opener with Spoon River College (15-12, 0-2).
In game one, it was scoreless until the fourth, but Parkland never trailed on the way to a 7-1 victory. In game two, three
Summer Johnson home runs sparked the Cobras as they erased a 2-3 deficit and won, 6-3.
Up next, Parkland remains in Champaign, Ill., for its second conference doubleheader against John Wood CC on Sunday, March 28. Game times are 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
Game 1: No. 19 Parkland- 7, Spoon River- 1 (7 innings)
Neither team was able to score through three innings. In the bottom of the fourth,
Reagan Cheely (1-3, HR, 1 RBI) hit a solo home run, giving the Cobras a 1-0 lead.
Then, in the fifth,
Lizzy Davis (1-1) drew a walk and advanced to third on an
Anna Walker (2-3, 2B, HR, 1 RBI) double.
Summer Johnson (1-4, HR, 1 RBI) laid down a bunt, and a Spoon River error allowed Davis to score, doubling the lead.
In the sixth, the Snappers scored one on an RBI single, but back-to-back-back dingers by
Isabel Shafer (1-4, HR, 3 RBI), Walker, and Johnson padded the Parkland lead at 7-1.
Chayse Ramey (10-0) pitched Parkland to victory. Ramey lasted seven innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out 12.
Game 2: No. 19 Parkland- 6, Spoon River- 3 (7 innings)
Spoon River took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but a
Summer Johnson (3-4, 3 HR, 4 RBI) 2-run home run tied the game. The Snappers put up one more in the second and carried a 3-2 lead into the third.
In the bottom of the third, Johnson hit a solo long ball, and
Reagan Cheely (1-3, 2B) scored on a wild pitch. The Cobras now led, 4-3.
In the fourth,
Isabel Shafer (3-4, 2B, HR, 1 RBI) and Johnson hit solo dingers to complete the scoring for the game.
Lizzy Davis (1-3, 2B) and
Kaylee Warren (1-2) each added one hit, as Parkland outhit the Snappers, 9-3.
Emily Senjan (4-1) earned the win for the Cobras. The righty surrendered three runs on three hits over five innings, walking three and striking out two.
Chayse Ramey (1 H, 3 SO) threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
