SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. – No. 19 Parkland College Baseball (17-8) dropped a close one on Tuesday, losing, 10-11, in nine innings, to (DI) South Suburban College (24-11).
South Suburban scored one in the first inning, but a
Tyler Grigalis (2-3, HR, RBI) third inning solo home run tied at 1-1. The Bulldogs answered with one of their own in the bottom half and then added four more in the fourth, taking a 6-1 lead.
Parkland got one back in the fifth, but South Suburban knocked in three in their half and then added another in the sixth, extending the lead to 10-2.
The Cobras' bats came to life late in the game, first plating two in the seventh. After the Bulldogs got one back, Parkland produced five runs in the eighth, highlighted by a
Cole Jones
2-run double, a
Cole Evans (2-5, 2 RBI) run-scoring single, and a
Jimmy Rybarczyk (2-4) RBI walk.
The Cobras were two runs down, 9-11, entering the ninth. Grigalis walked, and
Nick Gregory hit a double, putting runners on second and third. After a strikeout,
Austin Biehl hit a sacrifice fly to pull Parkland to within one. Jones drew a walk, putting two Cobras on base, but with two outs. A final strikeout ended the game.
Parkland was outhit by South Suburban, 9-14, and the Cobras committed 4 errors in the game.
Matt Parenteau (4-1) pitched three innings and took the loss for Parkland. Two runs were scored, both unearned, and he allowed 2 hits while striking out 4.
Tyler Heidkamp (2 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 K, 6 H, 4 BB),
Wil Stockman (2 IP, 2 ER, 2 R, 4 H, BB), and
Brandon Willoughby (1 IP, 2 H) provided relief out of the bullpen.
Up next, the Cobras will play a 4-game, home/away, MWAC series with John Wood CC. Games one and two will be in Champaign, Ill., on Friday, April 16. Games three and four will be in Quincy, Ill., on Sunday, April 18. The first pitch for each doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
