CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 11 Parkland College Men's Soccer (2-1) picked up a 4-0 win over Southwestern Illinois College (0-5) on Wednesday afternoon.
"Overall, this was exactly the response we needed after our last match," expressed Head Coach
Mark Sikora. "Due to many major injuries, it became another situation of 'next man up,' and our players did just that, especially
Luiz Faria,
Parker Theobald, and
Gage Smith."
The Cobras scored two first-half goals to take early control of the match. In the tenth minute,
Luiz Faria scored off an assist from
Parker Theobald, and in the thirty-third minute,
Jonathan Velasquez took a pass from
Matheus Araujo and placed it in the back of the net.
Parkland didn't let up, even late in the second half, as
Mikey Garza set up
Cameron Walker in the seventy-sixth minute, and then, in the eightieth minute, Theobald earned his second assist, laying one out for Faria who netted his second goal of the day.
Matteo Gigliozzi had one save in goal for Parkland.
"Today was also about great overall team defense, especially from our midfield quartet of
Mikey Garza,
Ata Marin,
Matheus Araujo, and Eikichi Saito," added Sikora. "As a coach, I cannot ask much more than to get goal production from the attacking players and to limit the other team to only one shot on goal for 90 minutes."
Up next, the Cobras remain in Champaign, Ill., to host Illinois Central College for a 2:00 pm match on Saturday, April 17.
