No. 17 Cobras Softball Wins in Dramatic Seventh Inning

Takes two from Frontier

FAIRFIELD, Ill. – No. 17 Parkland College Softball (40-5) picked up two wins, 9-6, and 20-2, from (DI) Frontier CC (15-23).

In game one, the Cobras were down by three after six innings and hit two home runs, scoring six in a dramatic seventh inning comeback win. In game two, Parkland left no doubt, leading big from the first inning on.

"The never give up mentality of this team is incredible!" expressed Co-Head Coach Dan Paulson. "Down, 6-3, in the seventh, and Shafer leads off the inning by beating out an infield hit to get things rolling... that play gave us the opportunity. As a coaching staff, knowing we are never out of it allows us to stay calm and just let the ladies play the game."

Co-Head Coach Kristi Paulson added, "Chayse Ramey was as sharp (in game one) as she has been all year. The fact that we are finding ways to win games, when we are all not at our best, is good to see."

Up next, the Cobras are in Champaign, Ill., for an MWAC doubleheader against Danville Area CC on Saturday, April 23. Game times are 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

Game 1: No. 17 Parkland- 9,  Frontier- 6  (7 innings)

After a scoreless first inning, Parkland got on the board in the top of the second when Sydney Eichelberger (1-5, RBI) singled in a run, and Isabel Shafer (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) hit a double, scoring two more. However, in the bottom half, Frontier plated four to take the lead by one, and in the fourth, the Bobcats added two more, extending the lead to 6-3. That score held through six innings of play.

In the top of the seventh, needing at least three runs to extend the game, a Shafer single and a Summer Johnson (1-2, 2B) double put Cobras on second and third, allowing Reagan Cheely to hit a sacrifice fly and pull Parkland to within two. Anna Walker (1-4, HR, 2 RBI) then stepped up and hit her second pitch over the fence, tying the game at 6. Then, after Lizzy Davis (3-4) singled and Taylor Dugger drew a walk, Ashley Lynch (1-3, HR, 3 RBI) hit the second home run of the inning, a 3-run long ball, to provide the final winning margin.

Sydney Eichelberger started on the mound for Parkland. She allowed seven hits and six runs over four innings, striking out one. Chayse Ramey (19-1) followed Eichelberger and secured the win for the Cobras. She pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five and walking one.

Game 2: No. 17 Parkland- 20,  Frontier- 2  (5 innings)

Isabel Shafer (4-4, 2B, HR, 8 RBI) and Summer Johnson (2-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) combined for 6 hits and 12 RBIs as each had a double and home run.

Anna Walker (2-3, RBI) and Eden McAvoy (2-1, RBI) each had a pair of hits, while Aynsleigh DeFries (1-1, 2 RBI) and Lizzy Davis (1-2, 3B, 2 RBI) each had a pair of RBIs.

Josie Birch (7-3) earned the win for Parkland, surrendering two runs on three hits over five innings, striking out one and walking one.
