HICKORY, N.C. – Parkland Women's Basketball (20-4) finished the 2020-21 season by winning the third-place game in the NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Tournament, a 54-50 victory over Illinois Central College (20-5).
"This week has been an incredible experience competing at the National Tournament," reflected Head Coach
Allie Lindemann. "We came with a purpose, and I couldn't be more proud of how this team has come together and brought energy and passion, both on and off the court. We continued to have that passion after a tough, heart-breaking loss (in the semifinals). The girls maintained a short-term memory, were selfless in their play, and came out with a tough win to secure third place. This year has been one for the books, one that will never be forgotten."
This was the eighth appearance in the DII National Tournament for Cobras Women's Basketball, and its fourth time qualifying for the Final Four. Parkland finished as Runner-Up in 2015 and also finished in 3rd place in 2011.
In today's game, a 9-0 run put Parkland up, 11-5, and the Cobras maintained the margin, leading 18-11 at the end of one quarter. Illinois Central got to within two, at 24-22, but Parkland scored the last four points of the half to lead by six, 28-22.
The Cobras scored the first six points of the second half to build the lead to twelve. The Cougars put together a 6-point run, but Parkland had an 7-point run of its own and led, 48-34, after three.
Illinois Central turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cobras, 16-4, and pulling to within two points, 52-50, with 1:02 on the clock. Two Parkland turnovers gave the Cougars a couple of chances, but they responded with an offensive foul and missed 3-pointer, allowing the Cobras to catch their breath. With six seconds remaining,
