NORMAL, Ill. – No. 2-seed Parkland College Baseball (34-15) won its first game in the double-elimination NJCAA Central District (Region 24) Championship Tournament, a 6-2 victory over No. 7-seed Vincennes University (23-30) in nine innings.
Parkland scored one run in the first inning, on a
Hogan McIntosh (2-4, HR, RBI) home run, and added another in the second, on a
Jackson Blemler (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI) RBI-double. The 2-0 lead held through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Vincennes loaded the bases, with only one out, but managed only one run. The Cobras' lead was reduced to 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Parkland added a run, on an RBI-single, but the Trailblazers matched it in the top of the seventh, making the score, 3-2, Cobras.
In the bottom of the eighth, Parkland scored on three singles, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch, extending its lead to four runs.
Zyon Avery (2-4) and
Tyler Grigalis (2-3, 2 RBI) each contributed a pair of hits, as the Cobras outhit Vincennes, 10-5.
Jay Schueler (5-3) pitched six innings, taking the win for Parkland. He gave up one earned run, allowing three hits and 2 walks while striking out nine.
Kyle Brown (2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) and
Jack Young (1 IP, 1 H, BB, K) threw in relief out of the bullpen.
With the win, Parkland will now move on to play #6 John Wood on Thursday, May 20, at 1:00 pm.
