Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 15 Parkland College men's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to take the lead over No. 11 Heartland Community College on Saturday, September 3rd, but the Cobras couldn't close out the Hawks, losing 6-5 in heartbreaking fashion. Heartland tied the game in the 87th minute before scoring the game-winner from a direct free kick just outside Parkland's box with less than two minutes remaining.
"It was a difficult match and we had a chance to win…we just couldn't see it all the way over the line," Parkland head coach
Mark Sikora said after the game.
The Cobras (1-2-1) held an early lead thanks to an unassisted, 10th-minute goal from freshmen
Kyohei Kuroda, but the Hawks (3-1-0) equalized in the 23rd. Parkland responded quickly, as
Yamato Kline scored his 6th goal of the season two minutes later on an assist from
Daniel Djordjevic and the team held a 2-1 lead at the half. Heartland got a hot start to the second half, scoring from a corner in the 47th minute before taking the lead in the 55th and extending it to 4-2 in the 65th. Sophomore
Sam Rummenie got one back for the Cobras in the 67th on a
Samuele Selva assist, and Parkland tied the game at four in the 79th on a
Hibiki Mizutani goal. The Cobras took a late 5-4 lead when Kuroda netted his second goal of the day in the 85th minute, but the Hawks tied the game two minutes later and scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th as Parkland falls 6-5 to their Region 24 rivals on Saturday.
