Karley Yergler and Roo Fenwick Named May Athletes of the Month

Yergler pitched in all eight games in May, and Fenwick brought home the Central District title

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland College Athletics is proud to announce that sophomore golfer Roo Fenwick and freshman softball player Karley Yergler have earned May Athlete of the Month honors. The two Cobras raised their high level of play late in their respective seasons, leading both teams to NJCAA DII Region 24 titles in May. Yergler started all eight postseason games for the Cobras, boasting a 6-2 record and a 2.07 ERA - and Fenwick won his second career individual title with an impressive performance at the Region 24 Championship in Bloomington, Indiana.

Karley Yergler, a freshman from Mahomet, Illinois, appeared in eight postseason games in May, starting all eight and compiling a 6-2 record with four complete games. The Mahomet-Seymour High School alum pitched 44 innings, allowing 33 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 47 batters and producing a 7.48 K/7. At the plate, Yergler slashed .381/.435/.810 in 21 at bats, recording eight hits - including three doubles and two home runs - seven RBI and four runs. At the NJCAA DII Softball World Series, Yergler went 7-12 with two doubles and two home runs and drove in six. In the circle, the freshman allowed just six earned runs and 13 hits in 26.0 innings pitched, striking out 27 in five games. Yergler, a science student at Parkland College, is the daughter of Becky Yergler and Paul Yergler.

Roo Fenwick, a sophomore from Aberdeen, Scotland, opened the month of May with "the best three rounds" his head coach Corbin Sebens has "ever seen," giving him the individual title at the NJCAA Region 24 Championship and helping Parkland College secure its fourth District Championship in the last five attempts. Fenwick battled cold, rainy, and windy conditions at the difficult par-71 Pfau Course at Indiana University on May 1st and 2nd to shoot 72, 73, and 74 for a final score of 219 (+6) and win the event by seven strokes. The Hazlehead Academy alum followed that performance with a top-30 finish at the NJCAA DII National Championship later in the month, shooting a four-round score of 301 (+13) to place in the top 40 for the second straight year. Fenwick, a Psychology major at Parkland College and a Flagler University commit, is the son of Gill Fenwick and Bob Fenwick.

"Roo played some of his best golf towards the back end of the season," Sebens recounted. "The golf he played at regionals – on that golf course, in those conditions, was the best golf I've ever witnessed. The future for Roo is very bright!"
