CLEARWATER, Fla. – The No. 4 Parkland College Softball team went 1-1 on its second day at the JUCO Kickoff Classic and Showcase on Saturday, January 27. The Cobras (2-2) shut out the State College of Florida (2-1) in a 2-0 win before losing 5-2 to No. 10 (DI) Indian River State College (3-0), capping their second straight 1-1 day. Returning All-American
Karley Yergler (1-1) struck out nine batters over six innings of work in the win over the Manatees, and sophomore
Emma Mason led the team with 2 RBI on Saturday.

Up next, Parkland wraps up its time at the JUCO Kickoff Classic with games versus Polk State College and St. Petersburg College tomorrow, January 28, at Eddie C. Moore Park. First pitch against the Eagles (0-1) is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. EST, and the Cobras will take on the Titans (0-1) at 1:30 p.m. EST.

At the plate, Yergler (2-3, RBI) doubled in the top of the 2nd to drive in
Kailee Otto (2-2, 3B, R) and open the scoring while sophomore
Lexie Griffin (1-4, RBI) drove in
Mia Ruder (2-4, R) with a double of her own in the 3rd. Parkland put runners on base in every inning on Saturday morning but did not drive in any runs the rest of the way in the 2-0 win.

Yergler (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 9 K) picked up her first win of the season, striking out nine. Sophomore
Ryleigh Owens (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER) produced three groundouts in her second relief appearance.

Game 2: No. 10 (DI) Indian River State 5, No. 4 Parkland College 2

The Cobras led 2-0 after
Emma Mason (2-3, 2 RBI) lined a 2-RBI double to center field in the top of the 1st inning – but the River responded in the bottom half, tying the game 2-2. Indian River State took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd on a three-run home run, and the score remained there the rest of the way as Parkland lost 5-2.
Tori Thomas recorded her first career hit with a pinch-hit single in the top of the 7th.

Ellie Vetter (1-1) was credited with the loss after 1 1/3 innings on Saturday evening, and
Ryleigh Owens (4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER) replaced her in the 2nd.
