CENTREVILLE, Mich. – The No. 1 ranked Parkland College men's basketball team resumed action with a hard-fought 77-74 win on the road over Glen Oaks Community College on Saturday, January 6. The Cobras (15-0) trailed the Vikings (8-6) with five minutes to go but worked the ball inside and battled back to secure the win and extend their program-best start to 15 straight wins. Freshman Champaign native
JaMonte Williams led the Cobras with 16 points off the bench.
"Tough road test for out group. Happy we were able to pull out the win playing through tough circumstances and foul trouble," Parkland head coach John Bowler said postgame. "Our depth and chemistry continue to carry us in these situations."
"With that being said, we need to do a better job of competing for a full 40 minutes," Bowler continued. "We can not get complacent with a lead. We need to correct this immediately."
Parkland built an early lead midway through the first half, and the Cobras went into halftime up 41-29, their largest lead of the half. Glen Oaks Community College put together a 12-2 run early in the second half to take a 48-47 lead, forcing a Parkland timeout with 14:05 to go. The Cobras responded, taking a 56-51 lead following an and-one from
Ken Sallee, but the Vikings answered, tying the game 57-57 with 9:21 left. Glen Oaks led by as many as five points before a quick 8-0 Parkland run put the Cobras up 73-70 with 2:18 remaining. The Vikings cut it to 75-74 with 18 seconds to go, but the Cobras broke the press out of the timeout and closed out the 77-74 road win.
