DANVILLE, Ill. – The Parkland College men's basketball team upset No. 1 seed Pima Community College (34-1) in the NJCAA DII National Tournament Semifinals on Friday, March 21.
Adam Squire led the offense with a season-high 23 points, and
Jaiden Martin recorded a double-double.
Parkland (33-2) set the tone early in their matchup against Pima Community College, taking an early lead and maintaining control throughout the first half. The Cobras had pulled ahead by 10 points in the first five minutes of the game, after
Drew Lewis Jr. made a three-pointer to get the 14-4 lead. The Parkland offense didn't slow down there, and back-to-back buckets from
Chandler Jackson made the score 26-8. The Aztecs started to build momentum at the end of the half, going on a 9-2 run, but the Cobras still led 44-38 at the break. The Aztecs came within four points at the beginning of the second half, but they never got closer than that. Parkland outscored the Aztecs 51-36 in the second half to win 95-74 over the previously undefeated team.
The Cobras shot 54.5% (12-22) from three-point range and 53.5% from the field (38-71). The Aztecs shot 37% (28-75) from the field and 35% from beyond the arc (9-26).
Up next, the Cobras play in the NJCAA DII National Tournament Championship at 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 22, against No. 3 seed Kirkwood Community College (32-3).
