SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The No. 2 Parkland volleyball team made quick work of both their opponents on Friday at the Lincoln Land Tournament, sweeping Waubonsee
(25-20, 25-12, 25-8) and Kansas City
(25-23, 25-19, 27-25). With the two wins, Parkland improves to 43-2 on the season.
After hitting .419 last weekend, Parkland continued its hot hitting on Friday with a combined .314 hitting percentage in the two sweeps. Leading the offense was reigning NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week
Rachel Verdun, as the freshman setter earned her fifth straight double-double, and 15
th and 16
th overall this season.
Amanda Greening led the team with 10 kills against Waubonsee, while
Katelyn Riffle tallied 14 kills to lead the Cobras against Kansas City.
No. 2 Parkland 3, Waubonsee 0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-8)
The Cobras started their weekend with its second sweep of Waubonsee this season after first winning in straight sets against the Chiefs back on August 26. The Parkland offense got off to a quick start on Friday with a .412 combined hitting percentage, including a blistering .636 clip in the third set, to finish off the sweep. Verdun quarterbacked the attack with her 15
th double-double of the season, while freshman
Amanda Greening led the Cobra hitters with 10 kills on an errorless 15 attacks. Balancing out the attack, opposite side hitter
Katelyn Riffle and middle blocker
Dakota Harmon added in seven kills and six kills, respectively. Harmon also led the Cobras defensively with six kills, while freshmen
Brooke Norder and
Rachel Verdun steadied the passing game with a combined 26 digs.
No. 2 Parkland 3, Kansas City 0 (25-23, 25-19, 27-25)
Again spurred on by a double-double from Verdun (35 assists, 13 digs), the Cobras hit .250 across the three sets and added in eight blocks on the defensive end. After finishing second on the team with seven kills against Waubonsee, Riffle added a team-high 14 kills on 28 swings in the night cap. The 21 kills were best on the team between the two matches. Harmon again contributed to the offensive and defensive efforts with six kills and five blocks, while Norder led the Parkland back row with 23 digs.
Up next, the Cobras return to the court on Saturday for two more matches to conclude their regular season road schedule. Parkland will face Neosho County at 11:30 a.m. central time before battling No. 7 Grand Rapids at 1:30 p.m.
