Cobras miss last second chance, fall to John Wood 68-67

Quin Nottingham's 15 footer hit the backboard and front rim before spinning off on Saturday as the #3 Parkland Men's Basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 68-67 decision at John Wood. The miss was one of several over the final 30 seconds that could have given the Cobras the victory.

The first half started slowly for the Cobras who found themselves in foul trouble as they trailed by as many as 10 points during the half.  PC would find back to tie the game and trailed just 38-35 at intermission.  Marcus Latham 11 points in the opening half and Nottingham had 8 points in just six minutes of play to keep the game close.  The second half started well and the Cobras would eventually take their biggest lead of the contest at 5 but went cold from the field to let John Wood back into the game.

Down two with 55.1 left in the game, PC would foul and the Blazers would make 1 of 2 to grab a three point lead. Devonte Daniels would rebound his own miss and feed a cutting Latham who knocked home his shot to cut the margin to just one.  PC would force a turnover and appeared to regain the lead but were called for traveling on a wide-open dunk.  Down one the Cobras would kick up the pressure but could not get a steal and were forced to foul with 9.4 left.  John Wood would miss the front end of the one and one and Marcus Latham would get off a contested lay-up with just two seconds remaining but missed and the ball was knocked out of bounds with 1.3 to go.  After a time out, Nottingham would get a good look but the ball wouldn't go down as PC would see their five game winning streak come to an end.

Isaiah Curry had a huge game for Parkland as the finished the night with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Quin Nottingham came off the bench to add 20 while Latham ended with 13 points but just two in the second half. Cory Miller paced John Wood with 21 points while Jonny Dahl (16 points 11 boards) and Aziz Fadika (10 points 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles. Both teams shot 41% from the field but the Blazers won the battle of the boards 42-36.

The loss drops Parkland to (16-3 2-1) while John Wood improves to (14-9 2-1). Parkland will host league and Region 24 leading rival Danville Area CC (18-3 3-0) at 7:30 on Wednesday night at the Dodds Athletic Center.
