TOLEDO, Ohio – Parkland volleyball swept through its three matches on Friday at the Owens Invitational, beating Glen Oaks (MI), Catawba Valley (NC) and Mott (MI) to improve to 11-0 on the season. The second-ranked Cobras were led on Friday by a pair of dominating performances from
Shelby Nunamaker, as the redshirt sophomore middle blocker set individual match career bests in both kills (18) and blocks (10).
Winners in 33 of its 34 sets this season, the Cobras' nine set wins on Friday stretched the winning streak to 32 straight set victories dating back to the third set of its season-opening match against Kishwaukee.
For Nunamker, the Cobra middle blocker tallied 34 kills on the day with a .343 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Tri-Valley High School product recorded 19 blocks across the three matches. On the season, Nunamker is averaging three kills per set and 1.88 blocks per set.
Parkland's opening match of the day was led by the Cobra blockers who led the team to a season-high 16 blocks in the straight set sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-16) over Glen Oaks. Leading Parkland's stinginess at the net was redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Shelby Nunamaker with 10 stuffs, including two solos, to tally her first double-digit blocking performance of her career. Joining Nunamker at the net, seven other Cobras each earned a block, including four with three block assists. Nunamaker also had a hand in the Cobra attack with seven kills, third most on the team behind freshmen
Ryleigh Warfel (9) and
Gabby Wessels (8). Overall, the Cobras hit at a .245 clip while receiving kills from seven different hitters.
Back in action later in the morning against Catawba Valley (NC), Warfel and Wessels again led the charge in a 25-21, 25-14, 25-12 sweep with double-doubles, the fourth for Warfel and third for Wessels. Warfel pounded 14 kills on 29 swings (14-1-29), while finishing one dig shy of her season-high mark with 17 digs. Wessels added in 11 kills (11-5-27) of her own to go along with 14 digs and five service aces. The five service aces is the most for Wessels since the opening match of the season.
As a team in the Catawba Valley match, the Cobras hit .252 as a team with a season-high 97 digs. Setting the pace for the Parkland digging effort was Norder who owned a season-best 30 of the 97 Cobra digs.
The Cobras closed out the nine straight set victories on Friday with a trio of wins over Mott (MI), 25-14, 25-12 and 25-13. Posting its best hitting percentage of the three matches, the Cobras hit at a .365 success rate, highlighted by a blistering .708 hitting percentage from Nunamker on 24 swings. Making an error on just one of the 24 swings, Nunamaker racked up a career-high 18 kills to set a new individual season-high for Parkland. Joining the redshirt sophomore was freshmen Warfel and Wessels who tallied nine and eight kills, respectively.
The Cobras return to the court tomorrow at the Owens Invitational for a pair of matches against Michigan-native squads. The Cobras face Grand Rapids at 9 a.m. central time, followed by Oakland at 2:15 p.m. The three-day Invite concludes on Sunday with two morning matches.
