Parkland Defense Leads to Road Win at Malcolm X

Cobra forwards score 45 of team’s 67 points

CHICAGO, Ill. – Parkland women's basketball held Division I Malcolm X to 26 percent shooting on Thursday night in route to a 67-39 road victory. Improving to 12-6 on the season, the Cobras were led by double-figure scoring from Micah Tapscott (16 points), Emily Meinert (12 points) and Madelyn Brouwer (10 points).

Controlling the game from the tip, Parkland held Malcolm X to single digits in each of the first two quarters, beginning with a 21-8 advantage in the first period. Leading 37-16 at the half, the Cobras won the final two quarters as well, adding seven points to their margin of victory, for their second victory this week.

In addition to holding Malcolm X to 26 percent shooting, the Cobras also controlled the glass with 51 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards. Leading the effort were four Cobras with seven or more rebounds. Point guard Olivia Babcock and forward Cassie Russo led the team with eight rebounds each, while Madelyn Brouwer and Emily Meinert each grabbed seven.

On offense, Parkland's post presence dominated the outcome with the four Cobra forwards combining for two-thirds (45 points) of the team's scoring. Tapscott scored in double figures for the fifth straight game – the third straight game leading the team – and is averaging 18.2 points per game during that span. Meinert finished second on the team with 12 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting, while Brouwer hit 5 of her 10 attempts for 10 points. Off the bench, Cassie Russo scored seven points and grabbed four offensive rebounds.

Joining the front court performance, were guards Shoente'ra Russell and Gemma Rescasens. Russell tallied nine points to lead the backcourt, while Rescasens helped facilitate the offense with a team-high six assists. The six assists for Rescasens marks her seventh game this season with at least five assists.

Up next, Parkland will travel to Olney, Ill., for a Monday, January 21, matchup against Olney Central at 5:30 p.m. central time. The Cobras return home next Saturday, January 26, to open M-WAC play against Danville Area CC.
