Cobras Blowout Kishwaukee to Open 2019

Four Cobras score in double figures

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland women's basketball won its 10th game of the season with a 93-46 victory over Kishwaukee on Friday night inside the Donald Dodds Athletic Complex. Marking their largest victory of the season, the 47-point victory was spurred on by double-digit scoring from Gemma Rescasens (16), Emily Meinert (16), Alexus Cole (15) and Micah Tapscott (11). With the victory, the Cobras improve to 10-5 on the season.

Shooting a season best 56.1 percent from the field – topping their 53.2 percent efficiency on December 1 versus Triton – the Cobras's offense knocked down 64 percent of its shots in the first 30 minutes of the game, including a prolific 10 of 14 (71.4%) in the third period. Parkland was equally impressive from beyond the arc, connecting on 52.6 percent (10-19) three-point attempts, nine of which came from Rescasens and Cole. Setting up the attack on Friday were 29 assists on the 37 made field goals, led by six from guard Lotte Miller.

The Cobras also imposed their will on the other end of the floor, holding Kishwaukee to just 28.1 percent shooting overall and 20 percent from three-point range. In addition to the contested shots, Parkland forced 27 Cougar turnovers – converting the extra possessions into 31 points – and won the rebounding battle, 39-29.

Leading the scoring were starters Gemma Rescasens and Emily Meinert with 16 points. Setting a new season high, Rescasens did her damage from behind the arc with four made threes on five attempts and has now scored in double figures in seven of her last eight games. Meinert –Parkland's December Female Athlete of the Month – finished one point shy of her season high (17) from last Sunday against No. 3 North Iowa Area with six made shots to go along with seven rebounds.

Fellow starters Alexus Cole and Micah Tapscott joined Rescasens and Meinert in double figures, as Cole set a new career high with both 15 points and five made three-pointers to go along with a career high five assists. Tapscott scored 10 or more points for the second straight game, and third in her last four, with 11 points while adding in four rebounds.

Just shy of double figures, guard Olivia Babcock and forward Cassie Russo tallied nine points in the Cobra victory. Continuing to crash the glass for head coach Mike Lindemann, Russo also tied for the team high with seven rebounds, including three on the offensive end.

Leading by as much as 57 points in the rout, Parkland put the visiting Cougars away with an extended run from midway through the first quarter through the end of the first half. Tied at 10, the Cobras closed the quarter on a 15-6 run in the final four minutes. Still leading by nine a minute into the second period, a pair of Meinert free throws started a 13-0 run to push the lead to 40-18, and then added a 14-2 run to complete a 29-8 second-quarter advantage and lead 54-24 at the break.

Continuing to control the game, Parkland outscored Kishwaukee by 15, 25-10, in the third quarter, and then pushed the lead out to its largest margin, 91-34, midway through the fourth period.

Up next, Parkland will travel to South Holland, Ill., for a Tuesday, January 8, matchup against South Suburban. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. cen
