CHAMPAIGN, IL – No. 1 Parkland volleyball swept its first two matches of the Parkland North vs. South Challenge, winning in straight sets over #17 Carl Sandburg CC (25-20, 25-12, 25-8) and McHenry CC (28-26, 25-14, 25-22). The Cobras have now won 32 straight matches to improve to 49-1for the season. Individually,
Ryleigh Warfel, who currently has 842 career kills, entered the Cobras top-5 in that category.
In Match 1 (#17 Carl Sandburg),
Summerlyn Smith (17 assists) and
Rachel Verdun (16 assists) assisted teammates
Amanda Greening (11 kills),
Abigail Burnett (11 kills, 4 blocks) and
Ryleigh Warfel (8 kills, 9 digs). Defensive standouts included
Gabby Wessels (11 digs), Warfel, along with
Paige Yoder (6 blocks), Burnett, and
Hannah Benson (3 blocks).
In Match 2, McHenry CC challenged the Cobras throughout the match, leading most of set one. Ultimately, Parkland came from behind to take that one, 28-26. Defensive highlights from the match included 60 team digs, led by
Ryleigh Warfel (12 digs, 12 kills),
Brooke Norder (12 digs),
Ellie Stone (9 digs, 3 aces), and
Gabby Wessels (9 digs). Leading the defense at the net were
Hannah Benson (5 blocks), and
Abigail Burnett (4 blocks, 11 kills). The offense was led by Warfel,
Amanda Greening (12 kills), and Burnett, the latter finishing with a .500 hitting percentage. Leading in assists for the offense were
Summerlyn Smith (19 assists) and
Rachel Verdun (16 assists).
