Parkland Women’s Basketball Opens with Two Wins

Lindemann Debuts as Coach, Meinert Leads in Scoring

CHAMPAIGN, IL. –Parkland women's basketball opened its 2019-20 campaign with two wins this weekend, the first over Black Hawk College, 64-53, and the second over #13 Moraine Valley CC, 70-51. Sophomore forward Emily Meinert led all scorers in each of the victories. This weekend also marked the debut of new head coach Allie Lindemann.

In Friday night's win over Black Hawk, the Cobras fell behind early and trailed after one quarter. A dominating second quarter, however, provided a 32-22 advantage at the half. A strong Black Hawk third quarter brought the Braves within 4, but Parkland pulled away in the 4th to win by 11.

Individually, Emily Meinert (17 points, 8 rebounds) led all scorers while shooting 8 for 9 from the field. Adding to the offense were Peyton Crowe (13 points, 5 assists) and Cassie Russo (11 points, 9 rebounds). Leading rebounders included Russo, Meinert, and Naomi McDaniel (7 rebounds).

On Saturday, #13 Moraine Valley visited and left with the first blemish on their record. Parkland started strong, leading 15-9 after one period, and proceeded to outscore their opponent in each successive frame. Emily Meinert (14 points, 10 rebounds) earned a double-double and led both teams in points and rebounds. Offensive assistance came from Cassie Russo (12 points) and Peyton Crowe (11 points), and the Cobras spread 17 assists among 8 different players. Kiersten Price-Wilson (3 steals) provided a defensive spark that led to 26 turnovers for the Cyclones.
