CICERO, IL –No. 13 Parkland women's basketball (7-0) came from behind to extend its current winning streak with a 62-56 win over Morton College (5-3).
Emily Meinert (15 points, 15 rebounds, 2 blocks) led the way with a huge double-double that included 13 defensive rebounds and 2 blocked shots.
The Cobras unblemished record to open the season seemed in jeopardy as a slow start yielded a 4-point lead to the host Panthers after two quarters. The opponent's lead was extended to as much as 11 in the 3
rd until Parkland began slowly chipping away. The tide seemed to fully turn when
Peyton Crowe (12 points, 3 steals) hit a half-court buzzer beater at the end of the 3
rd quarter, cutting the Morton lead to 2 points. In the 4
th quarter, the post duo of Meinert and
Cassie Russo (15 points, 3 blocks) carried the scoring load, combining for 15 of the team's 21 points. The Cobras were also strong at the line in the closing period, making 9 of 12 free throws.
Throughout the game, additional Parkland offense came from
Ariana Booker (8 points) and Gema Alegre (8 assists), the latter recording a season high in assists. Strong on the defensive side were
Bree Trimble (7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) and
Alex Specht (5 rebounds), who combined for 11 defensive boards.
