PLYMOUTH, Ind. –No. 8 Parkland women's basketball (11-1) came from behind to post a 71-63 win over Ancilla College (6-3). Five Cobras scored in double figures, leading the team to 71 points, the most by a Chargers opponent this season.
For a large portion of the game, it looked as if the Cobras had not shaken off their first loss of the season, 3 days earlier. Sluggish, sloppy play provided the Chargers multiple transition opportunities, and the opponent capitalized, taking a 12-point halftime lead, 38-26.
Defensive adjustments in the locker room paid off, as Parkland limited Ancilla to 24% shooting in the second half. Winning the battle of the boards, by 12, was also an accomplishment as the Chargers are ranked 6th in the nation in that category. Leading the way in rebounds were
Emily Meinert (15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks) and
Cassie Russo (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks), and they were assisted by the trio of
Gema Alegre (12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals),
Peyton Crowe (11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), and
Naomi McDaniel (5 rebounds) who combined for 15 more.
The Cobras stepped it up on the offensive end as well, outscoring the Charges 45-25 in the second half. The same group of Meinert, Russo, Alegre, and Crowe, along with
Bree Trimble (11 points), paced the Parkland scoring attack.
Up next, the Cobras are off to Fort Pierce, Florida, to take on Indian River State College on Friday, January 3rd, at 1:00 pm.
