ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The No. 11 Parkland men's basketball team fell to 8-3 on the season after a 58-75 loss to Moberly Area CC (9-3).
Both teams came out battling, with Parkland holding an early 12-9 lead. The offense stalled, however, as Moberly scored 11 straight points to go up 20-12. A pair of
Carter Jeffries (16 points, 4 rebounds) free throws stopped the run, but the Greyhounds continued building the lead which reached 14 points. The Cobras finally made a run of their own, cutting the Moberly lead to 6, at 36-30. The Greyhounds add a 3-pointer just before half to lead 39-30. Parkland committed 10 turnovers in the first half and was 0-8 from 3-point range.
The second half started poorly when
Joey Saracco (8 points, 4 rebounds) picked up 3 quick fouls, fouling out of the game with 16 minutes still on the clock. The Cobras remained cold from the floor, particularly from the paint, and they fell behind by as many as 27 points. As the game wound down, Parkland continued to fight. Offensive help from
Bruno Williams Jr. (9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) and
Tommy Makabu (9 points, 2 steals), along with some scrappy play on defense late in the game, reduced the final deficit.
Despite forcing Moberly into 22 turnovers, holding the team to 20 points below its season scoring average, and winning the battle at the charity stripe 18-7, Parkland could not overcome the extremely cold shooting. The Cobras finished shooting 26% from the floor, including 15% from beyond the arc.
Up next, the Cobras are home for a game against Wilbur Wright College on Thursday, December 12
th, at 7:00 pm.
