th game of the season, defeating Danville Area CC, 77-67, to improve to 5-0 in the M-WAC this season. Winning its seventh straight game, the Cobras were led by 20 points and nine rebounds from freshman forward
Bruno Williams Jr. Also scoring in double figures were
Ty'Ohn Trimble (16 points),
Yaakema Rose Jr. (13 points) and
Charles Campbell Jr. (11 points).
Controlling the middle 20 minutes of the game, Parkland went on a 41-18 run from midway through the first half through the middle of the second half to take control of the game. The Cobras then held off a late run by the Jaguars that cut their lead down to five with a minute to go, knocking down eight free throws to clinch their fifth conference win.
Making nine of 13 field goal attempts,
Bruno Williams Jr. led the second half Parkland run with 14 of his team-high 20 points coming after halftime. The second 20-point game for the first-year Cobra, Williams has scored 39 points combined over his last two games. Williams Jr. was also active on the glass, nearly posting a double-double with nine rebounds.
Joining Williams Jr. in double figures, the Cobras' starting backcourt of Trimble, Rose Jr. and Campbell Jr. combined for 40 of the team's 77 points. The trio combined for 13-of-18 shooting on the day, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Trimble led the backcourt with 16 points for his third double-figure scoring performance in his last four games. Six of Trimble's 16 points came from the free throw line, as the freshman guard knocked down all of his free-throw attempts in the final minute-plus. Rose Jr. scored nine of his 13 points in the second half.
With both teams shooting above 50 percent for the first half, Parkland and Danville Area exchanged buckets for much of the first half. Tightly contested during the first 10 minutes, neither side could create separation as the game remained a one-possession game. Tied 17-17, a three by Danville Area started an 8-2 run to take its largest lead of the game, 25-19. Riding three buckets from
Charles Campbell Jr., the Cobras bounced back with a 9-0 spurt of their own to retake the lead. After a bucket by the Jaguars, Parkland carried the momentum through the end of the half with five of Trimble's 10 first-half points and a three-point play from Williams Jr. to end the half with a 36-31 advantage.
Still maintaining the two-possession advantage early in the second half, the Cobras extended the lead into double digits for the first time in the game with their second 9-0 run of the afternoon. At the center of the run was Williams Jr. with eight straight points to push the lead to 50-37 with 16 minutes left in the game. After the Jags cut the lead back to eight, 50-42, added another eight unanswered points to create its biggest lead of the day, 58-42, with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Danville Area refused to go quietly, slowly chipping away at the Parkland lead. Still holding double-digit lead with five minutes remaining, the Jaguars scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the Cobras' lead to five, 70-65, with a minute remaining on the clock. Knocking down eight of 10 free throws in the final minute, the Cobras staved off the late rally for a 10-point win.
Up next, Parkland begins their penultimate week of the regular season with their final two road games. The Cobras will play Lincoln Land on Wednesday, February 20, at 7:30 p.m. and then a 3 p.m. contest at John Wood on Saturday, February 23.
