CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland sophomore golf
Kristian Kristensen and sophomore pitcher
Tori Witruk were named Parkland's May Athletes of the Month on Wednesday afternoon. Kristensen was the Region 24 Medalist and earned All-America honors at NCAA Championships, while Witruk hit a walk-off home run and pitched 15 innings in the Region 24 Tournament.
Kristensen earned his second Cobras' monthly honor by leading Parkland to a second straight Region 24 Championship and the program's third best finish at NJCAA Championships with a 73.1 stroke average in seven postseason rounds. Beginning with winning the Region 24 individual title, Kristensen posted two rounds at 1-over 71 to win by six strokes. A week later, Kristensen led the Cobras to fifth at NJCAA Championships when he tied for eighth to earn his second straight First Team All-America honor, capped by a 1-under (71) final round. Earlier in the week, Kristensen was also named a PING First Team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of the America during the pre-tournament awards banquet.
"Kristian could not have finished the season any better by winning regionals by six shots, and then earning PING First Team All American and NJCAA First Team All-American," said golf head coach
Corbin Sebens."
Starting all three games in the tournament,
Tori Witruk pitched every inning of Parkland's doubleheader on the first day of the tournament in route to her second straight monthly accolade. Against Danville Area, Witruk held the Jaguars in check over the final four innings and then capped the comeback with a two-out, three-run homer for a 9-7 victory. Later that evening, Witruk held No. 1 seed Illinois Central to two earned runs over six innings while hitting her second home run of the tournament. In addition to the tournament success, Witruk also tossed 15 innings combined during the previous weekend against Danville Area and Lewis & Clark.
"Tori was our main pitcher during the month of May, pitching all games in the Region tournament," said softball head coach
Chuck Clutts. "Tori also had become a strong bat in the lineup with a walk-off home run in the region tournament to defeat Danville Area and also a big home run versus Illinois Central."
