QUINCY, Ill. –Parkland women's basketball (21-4, 4-2 MWAC) won its 4th conference game with a 69-55 victory over John Wood CC (10-16, 2-4 MWAC). Post players
Emily Meinert (23 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks), who led the Cobras in scoring, and
Cassie Russo (20 points, 15 rebounds), who had a career afternoon in both points and rebounds, carried the load throughout the game, combining for 43 points and 24 rebounds.
Parkland took an early 8-1 lead, but that quickly evaporated when the host Blazers went on a 10-2 run to go ahead. The Cobras fought back and built a 17-point lead midway through the 2nd quarter and maintained most of that by halftime, 36-23.
In the 3rd period, John Wood surged to within 5 points. Midway through the 4th, with the lead down to three, the Blazers missed a 3-pointer to potentially tie the score. Parkland responded with a couple of momentum changing baskets, pushing the lead back to seven. From that point forward, the Cobras remained in control and extended the lead to the final margin of 14.
Up next, the Cobras are in East Peoria, Ill., to take on #14 Illinois Central, on Wednesday, February 19th, at 5:30 pm.
