EMERSON, Ga. – No. 8 Parkland baseball split a doubleheader against Chattanooga State on Sunday, February 16, to open its 2020 baseball season. The Cobras won the opener, 10-7, but dropped the nightcap, 4-5, in extra innings.
Up next, Parkland will travel to Harriman, Tenn., for a pair of 2-game series against Roane State CC and Southeastern Iowa CC on February 21st and 22nd.
Game 1: Parkland 10, Chattanooga State 7
A 5-run eighth inning was key for the Cobras in their season-opening victory. Offensive firepower came from sophomore
Trevor Burkhart, who was 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases, along with redshirt sophomore
Jeremiah Lebron, who was 2-6 with 3 RBI and a homerun.
Freshman
Rigel Verciglio picked up the win with 1 inning of work, while freshman
Victor Fujiu pitched the final two innings, striking out 5 and earning the save. Sophomore
Ryan Culley started the game, going four innings and giving up 1 run on 1 hit. He also gave up 2 walks and had 8 strikeouts.
Game 2: Parkland 4, Chattanooga State 5 (10 in.)
The nightcap saw nine innings completed with the scored tied. In the tenth, the Tigers were able to plate the winning run off of sophomore Cobras pitcher,
Brennan Dolwick.

David Ascencio was 2-3 at the plate, with 1 RBI.

Anthony Silkwood started the game on the mound, fanning 3 and giving up 1 earned run in three innings. Sophomore
Max Rimac also pitched three innings, striking out 5 and giving up 1 earned run. Freshman Jay Scheuler, came in for the seventh, eighth and ninth, also giving up 1 earned run and fanning 7.
