HARRIMAN, Tenn. – No. 10 Parkland baseball picked up back-to-back wins, moving to 3-1 on the young season, defeating Roane State (5-8) by the score of 8-1, and walking off with a victory over No. 15 Southeastern Iowa (4-1) by the score of 3-2.
Trevor Burkhart was 5-8 on the day, and
Chase Gockel and Jimmy Deangello each picked up a win on the mound.
Up next, Parkland will remain in Harriman, Tenn., for a pair of games tomorrow, February 22nd, once again facing Southeastern Iowa CC and Roane State CC.
Game 1: No. 10 Parkland 8, Roane State 1 (7 innings)
The Cobras put up 4 runs in the first inning, and 3 more in the fourth, to take a 7-0 lead into the sixth. Each team then plated 1, with neither team scoring in the seventh.
Top hitters for Parkland included
Trevor Burkhart, who was 3-4 with 3 stolen bases, and
Hogan McIntosh, who was 2-3 with an RBI.
David Ascencio was 1-3 with a 2-run homerun in the first inning.
Chase Gockel started on the mound, pitching 4 1/3 innings and striking out 11, giving up 1 hit and 1 walk, and earning the win off a no-run performance.
Charlie Hodges pitched 2 2/3 in relief, striking out 6, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk, and giving up 1 earned run.
Game 2: No. 10 Parkland 3, No. 15 Southeastern Iowa 2 (extra innings (8))
The first four innings were scoreless, and then Southeastern Iowa scored 2 in the fifth. Parkland answered with 2 in the sixth, and it remained tied after the seventh. In the top of the extra eighth inning, the Blackhawks were unable to score. With two outs in the bottom frame, the Cobras'
Hogan McIntosh hit a single to right field.
David Ascencio followed with a grounder to third. The ensuing throw was off target, allowing McIntosh to score from first base in walk-off fashion.
Both
Trevor Burkhart and
Tynan Shahidi were 2-4 with a stolen base.
Ryan Cully started the game, pitching four innings, striking out 6, and giving up 3 hits and 2 walks.
Brennan Dolwick pitched 1 1/3, striking out 1 and giving up 2 hits and 2 runs, when Jimmy DeAngelo came in to produce the final 2 outs of the sixth.
Victor Fujiu earned the win, striking out 3 in the final 2 innings.
