Cobras Hang Tough with No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast

In second game, lose by one run to Hinds CC

MARIAN, Miss. – Parkland softball (0-6) was defeated, 4-9, by No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast (9-0) and then, 4-5, by Hinds CC (4-1). These were the final two games of a four-game slate in the Rush Invitational.
 
Up next, Parkland returns to Mississippi to play four games in the Hinds JUCO Classic. The first two will be on Friday, February 28th, against Mississippi Delta CC, at 4:00 pm, and against Holmes CC, at 6:00 pm.
 
 
Parkland 4, No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast CC 9 (7 innings)
Parkland captured a 3-2 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a Camryn Skundberg single that drove in two runs. Mississippi Gulf Coast tied it in the third, but the Cobras regained the lead, 4-3, after four innings. In the fifth, the Bulldogs scored the winning run and ultimately added four more.
 
In addition to Skundberg, Ashley Klinzing, Emma Newton, and Ashley Lynch, had one hit each for the Cobras.
 
Lauren Kavanagh pitched five strong innings and took the loss for Parkland. She surrendered seven runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out four and walking one.
 
 
Parkland 4, Hinds CC 5 (7 innings)
Parkland fell behind, 1-3, in the first inning, and then Madison Vogle launched a home run in the second to keep it close at 2-3. The Eagles added two in the third, and the Cobras matched that in the seventh but fell just short.
 
The Cobras offense out-hit Hinds ten to six on the day. Ashley Klinzing was 2-3, scoring once, and Isabel Shafer was 2-4, scoring twice.
 
"Lauren Kavanagh and Shelby Frederick combined to pitch an outstanding game," stated head coach Dan Paulson. Kavanagh took the loss for the Cobras, as she allowed three hits and three runs over two innings, striking out one and walking one.
