Parkland Softball Wins Two in Mississippi

Both dramatic, come-from-behind victories

BRANDON, Miss. – Parkland softball (2-6) picked up its first two wins on the season, knocking off Mississippi Delta CC (1-8) by the score of 11-10, and then coming from behind to defeat Holmes CC (1-5) by the score of 7-5.
 
In game one, a walk-off home run propelled the Cobras to a decisive, dramatic victory over Mississippi Delta. The game was tied at ten in the bottom of the seventh when Summer Johnson hit a solo homer. In game two, Parkland trailed 2-4 after six innings, but scored 5 runs in the top of the sixth to provide the necessary margin for its second victory.
 
Up next, Parkland will remain in Brandon, Miss., to play three more games today, Saturday, February 29th.  The Cobras will face Meridian CC at 11:00 am, #19 Hinds CC at 1:00 pm, and then #5 Highland CC at 3:00 pm.
 
Game 1: Parkland 11, Mississippi Delta 10 (7 innings) 
 
Each team scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the third. After the fifth, Mississippi Delta had taken a one-run lead, but by the sixth, Parkland was back up by two, 10-8. Madison Vogel (1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Ashley Klinzing (2-4, 1 RBI), and Emma Newton (2-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI) each drove in runs in that frame. The Trojans put two runs on the board in the top half of the seventh to tie the game at 10, setting up the dramatic, walk-off finish from Summer Johnson (2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI).
 
Parkland hit three home runs on the day. Johnson had a long ball in the seventh inning, Newton had a homer in the third inning, and Vogel went yard in the sixth inning. Both teams collected 11 hits on the afternoon. Bri Poehler (3-4) led the Cobras at the plate with three hits in four at bats.
 
Lauren Kavanagh started the game for Parkland. She went two and a third innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out one. Shelby Frederick led the Cobras to victory, surrendering five runs on five hits over four and two-thirds innings and striking out one.
 
 
Game 2: Parkland 7, Holmes 5 (7 innings) 
 
Parkland scored two runs early, but by the end of five innings, trailed Holmes, 2-4. A five-run sixth inning, including an Isabel Shafer (1-4, 1 RBI) homerun, propelled the Cobras to their second win.
 
Parkland racked up 10 hits in the game. Camryn Skundberg (2-3), Bri Poehler (2-4, 1 RBI), Emma Newton (2-4, 1 RBI), and Taylor Dugger (2-4) each had two hits.
 
Sydnee Shafer got her first pitching start of the season for the Cobras. She went three and a third innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out two. Shelby Frederick earned the victory, her second of the day, lasting three and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits and one run, while striking out four.
