CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –Parkland College Women's Basketball (1-0) opened its delayed 2020-21 campaign with a 71-62 win over visiting Jefferson College (0-1). The Cobras were led by
Naomi McDaniel (19 points, 12 rebounds) who produced a double-double. Parkland garnered a #14 national ranking in the NJCAA DII preseason poll, released Tuesday.
The Cobras jumped out to a 5-point first-quarter lead, but the Vikings closed the gap and trailed by only one, 31-32, at the half. Though Jefferson outshot Parkland from the floor, 48% to 38%, Parkland was dominate from the free throw line, 73% to 18%. The Cobras won the battle of the boards, 44-33, which led to a 15-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Assisting McDaniel on the offensive end were
Peyton Crowe (18 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) and
Ariana Booker (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists), who helped the Cobras bench outscore that of their opponent, 25-10.
Claire Wilhour (9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists) scored seven of her nine points in the first half.
