No. 1 Cobras Win Two Matches in Parkland Tri #1

Defeat first ranked opponent of season

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 1 Parkland College Volleyball improved to 10-0 on the season with two non-conference victories on Saturday, sweeping Lake Land College (25-13, 25-13, 25-20) and defeating No. 15 Sauk Valley CC (25-23, 25-16, 25-23). The Lakers (5-5) and the Skyhawks (2-3) were in Champaign competing in Parkland Tri #1.

As she produced a double-double, Halle Everett (11 kills, 10 digs, 3 blocks) led the Cobras in kills, with Hailey Sperling (9 kills, 2 blocks) right behind. Summerlyn Smith (35 assists) primarily initiated the offensive attack, while teammates Kayla Brandon (13 digs, 3 aces) and Brittney Litton (12 digs) were the most effective in the back line. Brandon also landed 3 of the team's 8 service aces.
 
At the net, Katie Kaiser (5 blocks), Jayden Sortor (3 blocks, 8 kills), and Everett, tallied 11 of Parkland's 16 blocks.

The Skyhawks threatened the Cobras in set one, leading by four points, 17-21. Parkland went on 5-1 run to tie it at 22, and then scored 3 of the final 4 points for the win. Set two was close early on, knotted at sixteen points, but the Cobras finished with 9 straight points.
 
Set three was tight throughout. Sauk Valley was up three, 11-14, but Parkland went on a 8-2 run to go up, 19-16. The Skyhawks then won 5 of the next 6 points and regained the lead, 20-21. After that, the set was tied at 21, 22, and 23 points, until the Cobras took the final two for the victory.
 
Halle Everett (14 kills, 12 digs, 4 blocks), who had her second double-double of the day, and Jayden Sortor (9 kills, 7 blocks) spearheaded the Cobras attack toward a total of 37 team kills.
 
Isabella Classen (13 digs) refused to let the ball hit the floor, and teammates Everett, Kayla Brandon (12 digs) and Brittney Litton (9 digs, 3 blocks) joined her in gathering 46 of the team's 62 digs.
 
In the front line, Sortor was a force at the net, producing 7 blocks. Everett had 4 of her own,  and Litton, Arika Richardson (7 kills, 3 blocks), and Katie Kaiser each had 3.
 
Summerlyn Smith pitched in with 30 assists, and Reilly Swierbut served 3 aces.
 
Up next, the Cobras are right back on the home court, hosting Heartland CC for an M-WAC match in Champaign, Ill., on Sunday, February 21, at 11:00 am.
