CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland College Softball (12-1) won games by the score of 4-2, and then 12-6, over visiting Kaskaskia College (5-5) on Friday afternoon.
In game one, a huge fourth inning propelled the Cobras to a low-scoring victory. In game two, both offenses were more prolific, but Parkland grabbed the lead in a big first inning and never let it go.
Up next, the Cobras are at home in Champaign, Ill., to host Frontier CC for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 14. Game times are 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
Game 1: Parkland- 4, Kaskaskia- 2 (7 innings)
The Cobras gave up 2 runs in the first inning on one of four errors committed in the game. The score remained 0-2 through three-and-a-half innings of play.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Madison Vogel (1-3, 1 RBI) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. She singled on a 2-2 count, knocking in
Summer Johnson (1-3). Then
Eden McAvoy (3-3, 1 RBI) singled on a 2-2 count, knocking in
Reagan Cheely (1-3).
Kaylee Warren (1-2, 1-2B, 2 RBI) then hit a double on a 1-2 count, sending to the plate the winning run,
Taylor Dugger (1-3), along with Vogel. The 2-run lead held through seven innings to secure the win.
Chayse Ramey (7-0) took the win for Parkland. Ramey allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out 12.
The visiting Blue Angels did not commit a single error in the field.
Game 2: Parkland- 12, Kaskaskia- 6 (7 innings)
The Blue Angels scored one in the first, but Parkland put together five in the bottom half.
Isabel Shafer (1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI) led off with a home run, and then, with the bases loaded,
Taylor Dugger (2-4, 2-2B, 2 RBI) hit a two-run double to spark the big inning. The Cobras added three more and led, 5-1.
Anna Walker (3-4, 1 HR 1 RBI), who also had a double and triple in the game, hit a solo long ball to start the second, and
Madison Vogel (2-3, 3 RBI) singled in what would be the winning run, making it 7-1.
Kaskaskia scored one in the third, and knocked a grand slam in the fifth, but the Blue Angels were never able to re-take the lead. Parkland added 2 in the fifth and 3 in the sixth to cushion its lead.
Additional Cobras with multiple hits were
Eden McAvoy (2-3) and
Casy Mandrell (2-4, 3 RBI).
Emily Senjan (2-1) was the winning pitcher for Parkland College. The righty went four and a third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking zero.
Chayse Ramey threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Neither team committed an error in the game.
