EAST PEORIA, Ill. –No. 5 Parkland College Women's Basketball (15-2, 8-2 M-WAC) suffered its worst defeat of the season with a 46-77 loss at No. 3 Illinois Central College (16-2, 10-0). The Cobras only previous setback was also to ICC, by the score of 70-74, on March 4.
Parkland seemed ready for the challenge at the start and held a 14-13 edge with 2:00 on the first quarter clock, but ICC finished with a 7-0 run to jump into the lead, 21-14. In the second period, the teams played relatively even, with ICC taking a 36-26 lead into the halftime break.
The Cobras came out of the locker room cold, allowing a 19-0 run by the Cougars before scoring their only bucket of the quarter. ICC never looked back, taking a 61-28 third quarter lead and cruising to an overwhelming victory.
Mady Harper (12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks), who recorded a double-double, led Parkland in points, rebounds, assists and blocks. She was joined at the top in assists and blocks by
Naomi McDaniel (7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks).
Additional offensive support came from
Claire Wilhour (7 points, 4 rebounds), and additional help in the paint came from
Shaelynn Bell (5 points, 7 rebounds).
Peyton Crowe (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists) combined with Harper and McDaniel for 8 of Parkland's 10 assists.
Up next, the Cobras will have to regroup quickly as they return to Champaign, Ill., for their second top-10 matchup in as many games, hosting No. 8 Lake Land on Thursday, March 25. Tip-off is scheduled at 6:00 pm.
