Cobras Women’s Soccer Ties No. 13 Kaskaskia

Five first-half goals, but unable to hold on for first win

CENTRALIA, Ill. – Parkland College Women's Soccer (0-3-2) nearly pulled off an upset of No. 13 Kaskaskia College (4-1-1), scoring 5 first-half goals in a match that would ultimately end in a 5-5 tie.

"We came out very flat and struggled until our first goal," expressed Interim Head Coach Dan Vogelsang.  "After we scored, the team dynamics changed, and we were on fire! This is the best we have played all year, absolutely amazing!"

Kaskaskia scored first, in the 7th minute, but Parkland's offense sprung to life with three consecutive goals in a 10-minute span. In the 20th minute, Maria Jorquera (2G, 2A) leveled the score on an assist from Jamie Seibert (1G, 1A). Five minutes later, Seibert scored a goal for herself with an assist from Maddy Wade (1G, 1 A). Four minutes after that, Izzy Fritz hit the back of the net off a pass from Jorquera.

Parkland was up, 3-1, with fifteen minutes remaining in the half, but in the 31st minute, the Blue Angles put in their second goal to pull to within one. The Cobras responded with two more goals before the midway break. Wade took a pass from Jorquera and scored in the 37th minute, and three minutes later, Jorquera put one in, unassisted. Parkland was up, 5-2, as the teams headed to the benches for halftime.

In the second half, Kaskaskia scored three goals, while the Cobras were unable to match their first-half offensive threat. Regulation ended with the score level, 5-5, and neither team was able to break the tie in the overtime period.

"With no subs for the game, we struggled the second half, but every player was able to find their inner strength and fight to the end," added Vogelsang.  "I am so proud of what our team accomplished today, and it is great to see them improving every day."

Parkland keeper Michelle Miller made 9 saves on the day, including 3 in overtime, preserving the draw.

Up next, the Cobras are in Champaign, Ill., for an MWAC match against Lincoln Land CC on Tuesday, May 4, at 4:15 pm.
