No. 8 Seed Cobras Softball Stays Alive in National Tournament

Suffers loss to #1 Phoenix but defeats #15 Delaware Tech to advance

OXFORD, Ala. –No. 8 seed Parkland Softball (53-8) advanced in the 2021 NJCAA DII Softball Championship after losing, 0-5, to No. 1 seed Phoenix College (41-1) but then defeating No. 15 seed Delaware Tech (19-6) by the score of 11-3.
 
With the game-two win, Parkland stays alive and will now play on Thursday, May 27, at 4:00 pm. Its opponent will be the winner of the game featuring No. 4 seed Des Moines Area CC vs. No. 14 seed Oakland College.
 
 
Game 1: #8 Parkland- 0,  #1 Phoenix-5  (7 innings)
 
Phoenix scored two runs in the first inning and then added two in the second and one in the third to take an early, 5-0, lead. Neither team was able to score after the third inning.
 
The Cobras, who suffered only their second shutout of the season, struggled against Bears pitcher Brianna Hardy, who was the 2019 NJCAA DII Player of the Year. Isabel Shafer, Reagan Cheely, and Taylor Dugger each managed a single as Parkland was outhit, 9-3.
 
Chayse Ramey (27-4) pitched five innings and took the loss for the Cobras. She allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk while striking out one. Josie Birch (2 IP, 2 BB) provided relief out of the bullpen.
 
 
Game 2: #8 Parkland- 11,  #15 Delaware Tech-3  (6 innings)
 
Parkland started the scoring in the second inning when Taylor Dugger (3-3, 2 RBI) hit an RBI-single, and Madison Vogel (2-3, 2B, RBI) followed it with a run-scoring double. Sydney Eichelberger (2-2) then reached on a bunt to load the bases, and an Isabel Shafer (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI) double cleared them, building a 5-0 lead for the Cobras.
 
In the third, Delaware Tech scored three, cutting Parkland's lead to two, but the Cobras got one back in the fourth on an Anna Walker (1-4, 2 RBI) single, maintaining the lead, at 6-3.
 
In the fifth, Parkland picked up three more runs on a Dugger RBI-bunt, an Eden McAvoy (1-1, RBI) single to left, and a Walker sacrifice fly. The Cobras' lead was 9-3 after five complete innings.
 
In the sixth, after the defense held, Lauren Kavanagh (2-3, 2 RBI) hit a 2-run single, putting Parkland up, 11-3, and ending the game early.
 
Chayse Ramey (28-4) earned the win for Parkland, as she threw for the first three innings. She allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out three. Josie Birch (3 IP, 4 H, 1 BB) provided relief from the bullpen.
