CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 8 Parkland College men's basketball team picked up another win at home on Saturday, November 18, taking down Hocking College 97-82 at the Donald C. Dodds Jr. Athletic Complex. The Cobras (6-0) shared the basketball exceptionally well against the Hawks (4-2), producing 23 assists while shooting 36-70 (51%) from the field in their sixth straight win. Sophomore
Grant Coleman led the team in scoring with 15 points, going 3-6 from behind the arc, and sophomore guard
Brylan Phillips (8 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists) recorded a team-high seven assists.
Cobra head coach John Bowler talked about one big takeaway from the win: "Depth. Depth, depth, depth. We have a deep basketball team. We responded well in the second half, especially defensively."
"I think earning the win at home, being resilient, playing together, trusting guys that we have not played a lot of minutes yet…, those are really, really huge things for our team, and guys are staying ready, which is huge," Bowler added.
Hocking led by four early, but Parkland started hitting threes, and the Hawks called timeout trailing, 17-11 with 13:33 to go in the first half. Momentum stayed with the home team as the Cobras put together a 12-0 run to go up 29-13 with 10:53 left in the half, but the visitors refused to go away. Hocking cut the deficit to as little as six points, and Parkland went into halftime with a 54-45 lead. The Cobra lead continued to grow in the second half, as Brylan Phillps hit a three to put Parkland ahead 63-49 with 15:42 remaining. Both defenses stepped up down the stretch, slowing the scoring. Sophomore
Tye Banks provided a spark off the bench in the second half, hitting back-to-back shots to give the Cobras an 83-64 lead with 5:52 to go. Parkland held Hocking to 3-17 (17.6%) from three in the second half, and the Cobras closed out a 97-82 win.
