No. 7 Cobras Outlast Kankakee Community College 87-72

Parkland powers past KCC to improve to 9-0

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 7 Parkland College women's basketball team added a home win over Kankakee Community College 87-72 on Saturday, December 2. The Cobras (9-0) struggled from the field against the Cavaliers (5-3), shooting just over 30 percent in the game, but they outrebounded the visitors 59-38, grabbing a season-high 27 offensive rebounds for 26 second-chance points in the win. Freshman Lucy Fearday made her presence known off the bench on Saturday, tying a team-high 21 points and recording a season-high 20 rebounds to help Parkland improve to 9-0.

"We still need to work on dribble penetration since that seems to give us trouble, but overall, I'm proud of the win and appreciate the fans coming out," head coach Jean Demosthenes said after the game.

A sluggish start saw the Cobras trail 7-0 early, but Parkland closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 21-13 lead into the second. The Cavaliers closed the deficit to 23-18 with 7:39 left in the half when Demosthenes called timeout. The Cobras responded with an 8-2 stretch that extended their lead to 31-20 when the Cavaliers took their first timeout with 3:56 until halftime. The two teams traded buckets before the break, and Parkland led 41-32 at the end of the first half. Another slow start in the second half allowed the Cavaliers to cut the lead to 50-46 midway through the third quarter - but the Cobras closed the quarter on a 14-4 run to lead 64-50 heading into the fourth. Back-to-back KCC three-pointers closed the gap to 75-62 with 4:18 remaining in the game, but the Parkland lead was never in question as the Cobras kept their foot on the gas to win 87-72.
