No. 21 Cobras Lose 80-78 to Neosho County Community College

Parkland suffers its second loss of the season

Box Score COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa. – No. 21 Parkland women's basketball fell to Neosho County Community College (4-2) on Friday, November 15. The Cobras (3-2) led in the first half to the Panthers, but Neosho County had a big run in the fourth quarter to hand Parkland its second loss of the season. 
 
The Cobras led 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, after a Lucy Fearday bucket put the visitors in front with five seconds on the clock. The Cobras led by six at the end of the second quarter, going into halftime with a score of 38-32. Parkland extended the lead in the third quarter to 15, but the Panthers started to close the deficit in the fourth quarter. With 5:36 on the clock, the score was 63-60. By the 4:50 mark, the Panthers had pulled ahead and led the Cobras by one. With 19 seconds on the clock, the game was tied 78-78, and the Panthers had possession of the ball. Two made free throws put the Panthers ahead by two, and the Cobras fell 80-78.
 
"We have to learn to keep our foot on the gas when we are up double digits," Parkland head coach Jean Demosthenes said after the loss. "That is something as a coach I have to keep preaching to a young team."
 
"Overall, we didn't do a good job breaking the press, especially when we were up 13 points," Demosthenes added. "We have to keep working on press breaks and getting comfortable handling the high pressure that teams are going to bring night in and night out."
 
Lucy Fearday (26 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals) led the team in scoring and rebounding, followed by Stacie Vonderheide (15 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals). The Cobras went 29-53 from the field (54.7%), 2-9 from three (22.2%), and 18-27 from the free throw line (66.7%).
